Work with Sales & Marketing and company management to identify customer and consumer needs and target new product ideas to fill those needs. This includes staying abreast of current market trends by reading appropriate magazines and trade journals, checking marketing websites and databases, and surveying retail stores for new product launches
Work with Sales & Marketing to define key product claims and benefits, and any additional marketing ingredients, necessary for formulation of product ideas.
Define key performance indicators (i.e., combability, shine, color deposition, foam quality, etc) for new products and identify benchmarks against which to evaluate performance. Identify and develop, where necessary, methods to evaluate technical performance. Use statistical tools when necessary to monitor key product parameters.
Draft initial formulation for each new product. Keep the product cost and manufacturing feasibility in mind throughout the development process.
Batch, and adjust formulas as needed until product functionality meets specifications identified by customer (or Sales & Marketing staff).
Conduct technical testing to evaluate product performance, including: Product aesthetics (viscosity, color, etc.) , Product stability, Preservative challenge testing (performed by Micro Lab staff) and Product/package compatibility testing.
Advise both company and customers of any potential safety and regulatory issues associated with the formulation or production of a new product idea. Research current government and industry regulations and keep them in mind throughout the development process.
Conduct patent searches when necessary to both aid in development and avoid property infringement.
Research applicable raw materials. This includes meeting with chemical suppliers, reading technical literature websites for chemical companies, reading trade journals, and meeting with other industry chemists, attending trade shows and or technical conferences. Contact new and/or existing suppliers for lab samples and/or technical information.
Prepare laboratory batches for customers and/or Sales & Marketing as necessary.
Work closely with Sales & Marketing and other departments to:
Maintain weekly contact with Sales & Marketing to keep them updated on development progress.
Contact customers as needed to update them on project status and answer any technical questions they have.
Conduct consumer testing (building panels, external focus groups, salon testing) to evaluate consumer acceptance of formulas. Refine formulas as necessary.
Work with Process Engineer, Technical Services, to prepare production model and batch cards for products developed by C-Care’s Research & Development team.
Work with Process Engineer, Technical Services, to troubleshoot process during pilot/zero-batch production of products developed by C-Care’s Research & Development team.
Define finished good specifications for products developed by C-Care’s Research & Development team.
Assist Quality Assurance in defining and developing analytical test methods for use in testing finished goods formulated by C-Care’s Research & Development team.

Job Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related.
Minimum of 5 years chemical engineering-related and QA-related experience in a manufacturing facility with strong chemistry knowledge.
Sampling of batches may require lifting tank, tote, or drum lids and/or shifting around 55 lb. bags of raw material; lifting of 5 gallon reagent chemical drums; walking throughout facility (approx. 100,000 sq. ft); and climbing stairs to the processing area and to various storage tanks. Use of partial/full respirator and training by EH&S Manager is required.
